Re-creating Erica
What's new?
14 December 2007 - Midnight-Erica Data Set Update
The Midnight-Erica Dataset, initiated by BALLS, now has over 5663 individual animals
listed as ancestors of BA Kaptain Midnight. The current working list is here.
This link will open an Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format) file that contains a list of
all known ancestors of Midnight, together with a count of the number of times each
animals appears in his extended pedigree, and the minimum and maximum
generations within which they appear.
A free copy of Adobe Document Reader is available from http://www.adobe/com/
15 December 2007 - Midnight-Erica Pedigrees
With the upgrading of the system, we can now produce 7 Generation Angus Pedigrees
for animals related to Midnight.
Click here to see Midnight's immediate ancestry. For a colored version which highlights
common ancestry, click here. Additional pedigrees will be uploaded to the Midnight
Family Tree as time permits.
16 January 2008 - 800 new Ancestors identified
We have identified an additional 800+ animals in Midnight's pedigree.
The total unique ancestor count is now 6841. A complete list of these animals (149
pages) is here. This is a 277 Kb (small) Adobe PDF file. You can download the latest
free version of Adobe Reader here.
We have also tracked down the missing bull - Revolution's Golden Gleam. This takes
the number of Trangie-imported sires to 12. The List (also known as "The Genetic Make-
up of Linebred Erica ™ Angus" has been updated accordingly.
20 January 2008 - Home Page upgraded
2008 is a new and important year in Angus history. In 1808. Hugh Watson set out on a
journey to 'improve' the native black Angus-shire "doddies", as they were then known,
through the purchase of a bull, Tarnty Jock.
23 January 2008 - New reference articles added
Over the coming months, we plan to upload a number of articles of historical
significance and relevance to the breeding of the Erica-type Angus. Fittingly, our first
item, published in 1904, is about Young Viscount, perhaps "the greatest Angus bull in
history".
"Young Viscount was bred to both of Jilt's daughters, Jewel and Jewess, and from those
unions have come other J's, to the advantage of the breed."
25 January 2008 - Glencarnock update
The Honourable James D. McGregor (1860-1935) founded the Glencarnock Stud at
Brandon, Manitoba in the 1890's and made significant importations of Erica Angus
genetics from Scotland. Read more about this famous stud here.
26 January 2008 - Australia Day
The search for Kaptain Midnight's Australian ancestors has concluded. An additional 45
animals have been identified, bringing the total number of identified animals to 6886. At
least 50 animals of New Zealand origin still need to have sires and/or dams identified,
which will be our next priority.
A list (PDF file) of these animals, with the number of times they appear in Midnight's
pedigree, can be viewed here.
27 January 2008 - Notable Sire upgrade
We are upgrading our reference section to include pedigrees for Barclay & Keith's
'Notable Sires' that are found in Midnight's family tree. Internal links within each of the 33
articles have been added to facilitate navigation. Each pedigree (in PDF format) has
been coloured to indicate common ancestors within that animal's breeding.
A copy of Kaptain Midnight's Seven Generation Angus Pedigree is here.
29 January 2008 - Trangie Imported Sires and Dams
We have updated the list of the various bulls and cows imported by the Trangie Angus
Stud that appear in Kaptain Midnight's pedigree. The list, which includes the number of
times that these animals appear in his pedigree, can be viewed here.
31 January 2008 - Glencarnock Revolution Advertisement
In the 1930's, Trangie advertised the services of Glencarnock Revolution. We have
located a copy of an advertisement and placed it on the Trangie page, for your
information.
We have also produced some images that will give you an indication of what Kaptain
Midnight's extended pedigree looks like at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 generations. Links to
these images are located here.
2 February 2008 - Midnight Erica Data Set = 7001!
Overnight, the number of animals in Midnight's pedigree exceeded 7000 unique animals.
Sincere thanks to Kent Powell - Powell Angus Ranch, Kansas, USA for providing the
information on Blackcap Glenn 2nd - a bull we have been chasing for months.
Blackcap Glenn 2nd appears 251 times in Midnight's pedigree, as compared to Erica
843 who now appears 202,106,034 times. Click the link to download the current (PDF)
listing.
Kent's invaluable assistance is moving us closer to completing the extended pedigrees
of the critical sires and dams imported by Trangie.
5 February 2008 - Kaptain Midnight Photograph located!
We have discovered and uploaded a picture of Broken Arrow Kaptain Midnight as a young
(19 month old) bull. The photograph was taken by Neale Edwards - photographer for The
Land newspaper and was used in a Broken Arrow promotional brochure (circa 1998). A
chart outlining Midnight's growth rates on a first-calf heifer are also included.
A copy of the photograph can be viewed here.
6 February 2008 - Midnight's Trangie 'Grand-mothers'
Two of the most significant 'Erica' ancestors in Midnight's breeding are Glencarnock
Eurotia 4th and Erica McGregor 2nd (pedigrees still incomplete). These two cows were
part of Trangie's original importation and are the epitome of the Erica-type Angus being
redeveloped through the Line Bred Erica Project.
You can read more about these amazing animals in Greg Rhodes' GENETICS:ONLINE
articles published in 1996:
Glencarnock Eurotia 4th
Erica McGregor 2nd
8 February 2008 - Protine - Sire of Earl Marshall
We recently received a request - from a Cattle Discussion Board member - asking if we
had a copy of an extended pedigree for Protine 7122 (CAAHB) - sire of Earl Marshall
18154 and Pride McHenry 124th 27528.
As per the invitation on our Pedigree Page we are happy to provide what we can, so if you
are looking for information on an obscure,or not so obscure, Angus that may share a
common ancestry with BA Kaptain Midnight. Feel free to send your request to
info@linebredarica.com and we will see what we can do for you.
9 February 2008 - Linebred Ericas arrive on Flinders Island
After a 15 hour sea voyage from Port Welshpool, 20 Foundation Ericas (14 cows, 5 calves
and a bull) have arrived safely at Whitemark, Flinders Island. Greg Rhodes sailed to
Victoria on Thursday morning to personally accompany the herd to Flinders. This marks
the commencement of a new phase in the LBE project. (The bull is Xi - also known as
'Middie' - the only son of BA Kaptain Midnight retained by Greg for the LBE Project.)
In addition to supplying commercial stock bulls ideally suited to the Island's vealer
production systems, Greg will be overseeing the commencement of a grading-up
program to put the early maturing, easy fleshing Erica Angus genetics into the local
economy. Stay posted for more information on this exciting development.
10 February 2008 - TALIP Booklet updated
Greg has agreed to review a n article he wrote in 1999, called The Australian Lowline
Improvement Potential (Facts and Figures). In addition he has supplied some thoughts
on the implications of this research and what it means for the Linebred Erica project.
Of equal or greater interest, he clearly articulates what the Erica Angus characteristics
are. You can read Greg's latest thoughts here.
