I have known Greg Rhodes for a long time and I know that he is extremely reluctant to
attract attention to himself. For the past seven years since Peter sold BALLS, Greg has
been working with a few progressive breeders who believe that he may be on the right
track.
Greg has been line-breeding selected special cows that most exhibit Erica-type traits.
History will judge the contribution of Greg Rhodes to the Angus breed. Suffice now to say
that his brother best summed up his contribution in 1996, as follows:
"Since 1993, Broken Arrow GENETICS has been 'deconstructing' the Lowline herd, in
order to unravel the breeding activities that resulted in the Lowline breed. This has
involved tracing the ancestry of our stock back to those animals imported by Trangie and
beyond.
"Greg Rhodes, the principal of BAG, uses the knowledge obtained through this research
to develop maternal line pedigrees. These 'pedigrees' enable you to obtain a clearer
picture of the 'genetic' make-up of the Lowlines. By applying this information, in
conjunction with expert visual appraisal, Greg is able to identify which traits appear to be
coming through which cow lines and develops our breeding strategies accordingly.
"Due to the extensive research he has undertaken, Greg is probably the most
knowledgeable person about Lowlines and their breeding in the world today. Greg, who
also writes the GENETICS.-ONLINE page exclusively for LOWLINE:ONLINE, is always
available to discuss Lowlines with other breeders and those interested in the breed."
